A supplement label is a compact piece of product information. Reading it in a consistent order makes it easier to compare products and spot questions before you buy.

Start with the serving size

Look at the serving size and servings per container first. The amount shown for each dietary ingredient is tied to that stated serving. A bottle with 60 capsules may contain 30 servings if the serving size is two capsules.

Review the Supplement Facts panel

Check the ingredient names and the amount per serving. For vitamins and minerals, the panel may also show a percent Daily Value. A Daily Value helps you understand the amount in context; it is not a personalized recommendation.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration explains the information required on supplement labels in its Questions and Answers on Dietary Supplements.

Read the full ingredient list

Ingredients outside the Supplement Facts panel can include capsule materials, flavorings, sweeteners, and other ingredients. Review them alongside the active ingredients, especially if you avoid particular ingredients or have an allergy.

Check directions and cautions

Follow the package directions. Look for storage guidance, age recommendations, and warnings. If you use medication, have a medical condition, are pregnant or nursing, or are unsure whether an ingredient is suitable for you, ask a qualified healthcare professional before using the product.

Put claims in context

Words on the front of a package do not replace the detailed label. FDA notes that supplement structure/function and general well-being claims must be truthful and substantiated, and that required labeling rules apply. Be cautious of language that promises to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent a disease.
